Difference on creative advertising across different countries

#ALA102

Here we are going to see whether there are differences in creative advertising across different countries. I’m going to compare two different countries, Australia and India, with the same “Nescafe” brand.

Ad Taken from Australia and New Zealand
Ad Taken from India

What is the Ad About ?

Australia Ad

This ad features a barista talking about coffee, how they carefully pick Arabica and Robusta beans before they are roasted, and how they mix experts that produce a rich fragrance and a special bold taste. They also added that the coffee is of high quality.

Indian Ad

This ad shows an inspiring story about a cartoonist who loses his job at a newspaper company but doesn’t stops his creativity. The cartoonist shows how he steals glances and ideas of people life and creates his cartoon creativity on it. He says that it is like entering a person life without a ticket. They show him everyday he would draw something in a box which fits in a newspaper with a cup of nescafe but now he wonders what to do as he lost his job in a newspaper company. He says that his coffee motivates him to go back to work and even if it doesn’t reach the newspaper, it doesn’t have to. “A cartoon and a cartoonist cannot sit idle.”

Culture Difference

“National Culture cannot be changed, but you should understand and respect it.”

– Geert Hofstede (Hoftstede insights, n.d.)

According to Professor Geert Hofstede, there are 6 dimensions of natural culture that differentiates between different countries . So let’s compare these two countries with the dimensions.

https://www.hofstede-insights.com/country-comparison/australia,india/

In these two advertisements above, we ‘re just going to compare them to individualism and masculinity.

Individualism

In Australia, with a score of 90 on individualism, is a strongly individualistic society. This turns into a loose-knit community in which people have to look after themselves and their immediate families. Here in this ad, the barista presents a high quality coffee which can now be at your own coffee table which kinda shows how its targeted for an individual users. The user in scenario should be interested in coffee in order to enjoy the ad here.

Throughout India, with an intermediate ranking of 48, there is a culture with both collectivist and individualist features. The collectivist side means that there is a high preference for belonging to a larger social framework in which individuals are expected to act in accordance with the greater good of their defined in-group(s) and in the Individualist aspect of Indian society is seen as a result of its dominant religion/philosophy.
Here in this ad, shows a cartoonist who was first an individualist i,e he was working under a newspaper company until they let him go , which made him an collectivist as he began to expand his creativity in other platforms such as online, paper, glass , toilet roll, etc.

Masculinity

In Australia, with a score of 61 on this dimension and is considered a “Masculine” society which demonstrates that Australians are proud of their strengths and accomplishments in  life and provides a framework for recruiting and supporting decisions at the workplace.
This ad shows an Australian barista who selects the high quality coffee beans and blends it perfectly which makes the coffee create a rich aroma and a unique bold taste.

In India, with a score of 56 on this dimension and is considered a “Masculine” society. In reality, India is very masculine in terms of visual show of success and power. Their focus is on success and achievement, validated by material gains. Work is the core of one’s life and noticeable symbols of achievement in the workplace are very important.
This ad tries to inspire people to keep going and doing what they love. Their slogan for this ad is, ” Grab a coffee and keep going !”. This ad shows how the cartoonist doesn’t sit idle after his job and his coffee tells him to go back to work. This ad is very motivational and very innovative as it draw people’s attention and they promote their products at the same time.

What benefits and limitations are involved in using digital media to facilitate student learning and engagement?

Podcast on
” What benefits and limitations are involved in using digital media to facilitate student learning and engagement?

I selected the subject ” What benefits and limitations are involved in using digital media to facilitate student learning and engagement? ” to be explored in my podcast.
I figured that this would be an interesting subject to base my work on, as a student who uses digital media extensively daily, it would be helpful for me to learn more about it.
To continue with, it’s my first podcast, I’ve never done any podcast before, and it’s been quite a challenge for me to make it.

First, I started thinking about how I would structure my podcast, what it would involve, and what kind of information I would need to give a comprehensive answer to the issue.
I began to focus on the role of digital media in student learning and engagement so that I could see all the potential that digital media provides to those studying.
On the Internet, I studied the pros and cons of education and researched some journal articles and case studies on the subject. I’ve read numerous blogs, reviews and blog posts to understand how people have spoken about the topic from several points of view.

After I had all of the details I wanted to get my podcast together, one final step I took was to find more eye-catching and supporting evidence to back up my work. Then I made a sound cloud account to add some music to this podcast. I have looked and liked a lot of sounds, but I have selected which one is best for this academic work. I find a sound that is certified and safe to use.

After this, I’m moving to the next phase of this, I started practicing my podcast, there were a couple of mistakes in the beginning, but learning by doing helped me a lot to make this appraisal task easier. After I’ve done my practicing, I need to record it or edit it in audacity that I’ve never used to make it difficult for me to use this kind of application.

Going on, I recorded my interview on my phone-a voice recorder, there were some mistakes in my grammar and fluency. So I started recording again, and I felt like this isn’t my voice. It seems like someone else has been thinking, which has been fun. I was capturing my voice, and then I started listening to it, but it was like someone else’s voice that I couldn’t stop laughing.

I use the sound cloud to add music to this podcast and then add it to my blog post. It was fun to do this project, and I enjoyed it and learned a lot of new things.

Online presentation of embodiment creates an archive of the body (Smith, S and Watson,2014, pg 73).

Social Media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc. has being gaining popularity ever since it was brought up as it also offers the user the chance for self-presentation.
This study examines the motivation behind the choice of a profile picture and the image of the user that it gives out.(Yen-Chun Jim Wu, 2015, Pages 880-889) .

The profile picture also plays a vital part as it shows about the user’s personality. A research was conducted to study about the relation between the user profile picture and user personality. User personality were found to have an influence on the choice of people.

In my profile picture of both platforms (Twitter and Facebook) shows how I love nature and there is a nature background on both of the profile pictures and also shows about my style as it shows that I wear shades.

If a user was impressed or liked the choice of my profile picture, then they would like to follow me or send a friend request on the social platform to communicate with me. Also, this can probably make the user upload a same type of profile picture with the aim of spreading the same positive imprint.

According to an article by Kevan Lee , He gives an overview of the “7 Elements” for coming up with the best profile picture on social media.

These seven elements are:

  1. Smile with teeth
  2. Dark coloured suits
  3. Jawline with a shadow
  4. Head-and-shoulders, or head-to-waist photo
  5. Squinch
  6. Asymmetrical composition
  7. Unobstructed eyes

He also gives things to avoid such as :

  1. Hats
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Hair, glare, and shadows over the eyes
  4. Laughing smile
  5. Sexiness

According to research, in order to look likable , attractive, competent, and influential you have to:

  • Don’t block your eyes as sunglasses and hair covering it drops a likability score and may also lower the competence and influence.
  • Define your jawline. A shadowed jawline which gives an outline towards the jaw all the way around helps to increase the chances with likability, competence, and influence.
  • Show your teeth when you smile. The best smile, according to PhotoFeeler, is a smile with teeth. This leads to gains across the board in likability (nearly twice that of a closed-mouth smile), competence, and influence. A closed mouth smile has a small increase likability. A laughing smile increases likability even more, but you lose ground in competence and influence.
  • Try Formal Dress (For Men). Dark colored suits and light-colored button downs with ties give out the greatest effect on competency and influence out of all other factors.
  • Head and shoulders (or head to waist). Close-ups on just head shots brought scores down, as did full body shots.
  • Try a squinch. It is found that squinching your eyes has an increase across the board in competence, likability, and influence. A squinch is a slight squint. The idea behind it is that wide eyes look fearful, vulnerable, and uncertain. Slightly squinted eyes may come across as comfortable and confident.
